Exploring the Benefits of Speech Generating Devices in Speech Therapy: Insights from Our Meeting with Certified Seating and Mobility

At SAGE Speech & Learning Associates, we're always looking for ways to enhance our approach to speech therapy and provide the best tools for our clients. Recently, our team had the pleasure of meeting with Ashley Risner from Certified Seating and Mobility to explore the incredible benefits of using Speech Generating Devices (SGDs) in therapy. This collaboration is part of our ongoing effort to incorporate the latest technologies into our practice, ensuring that our clients receive the most effective and tailored care possible.

Speech Generating Devices (SGDs) are high-tech tools that offer augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) support for individuals with speech impairments or disabilities. These devices allow individuals who may have difficulty speaking to communicate with the world around them, using pre-programmed speech or text-to-speech technology. The SGDs are customizable to meet the unique needs of each individual, making them an invaluable resource in speech therapy.

Does Insurance Cover an AAC Device?

Yes! In most cases, SAGE Speech & Learning can assist clients in getting a brand-new AAC Device covered by their insurance company!

Key Benefits

1. Enhanced Communication: The primary benefit of SGDs is the ability to facilitate communication for individuals who struggle with verbal speech. These devices provide an alternative method for expressing thoughts, needs, and desires. By removing the barrier of verbal communication, SGDs empower individuals to interact with others and participate fully in their environments, which is essential for social inclusion and emotional well-being.

2. Increased Independence: One of the most exciting aspects of SGDs is that they give users the ability to communicate independently. For individuals who would otherwise rely on others to interpret or convey their messages, SGDs provide the freedom to express themselves directly. This independence not only boosts self-esteem but also fosters a greater sense of control and autonomy, which is a key component of personal growth and development.

3. Advanced Technology and Accessibility: SGDs come equipped with advanced technology that makes communication more accessible than ever before. At SAGE, we offer a variety of devices and software options to meet each individual's needs.

Some devices allow for different types of access, including:

Touch: The user can directly interact with the device by touching the screen.

Switch: A switch or button can be used to navigate through options. Head Mouse: Allows users to control the device with head movements.

Eye Gaze: Users can control the device with their eye movements, which is ideal for individuals with limited motor skills. These diverse access methods ensure that individuals with varying levels of ability can still benefit from the device, making communication more inclusive and effective.

How SGDs Enhance Speech Therapy

Incorporating SGDs (AAC Devices) into speech therapy allows therapists to provide clients with a more personalized, adaptive, and effective treatment plan. By using these devices, therapists can create a more interactive and engaging therapy experience, catering to each individual's unique communication style. SGDs also offer a valuable tool for goal tracking, as they can be tailored to focus on specific speech or language targets, making it easier to measure progress and adjust therapy strategies accordingly.

Why We're Excited About SGDs

Our meeting with Ashley Risner from Certified Seating and Mobility has reinforced what we already believe about the incredible potential that SGDs hold in transforming speech therapy. These devices represent a shift toward a more accessible, inclusive, and individualized approach to communication. At SAGE Speech, we are committed to integrating these technologies into our practice to ensure that every child has the opportunity to communicate confidently and effectively.

If you or someone you know could benefit from the use of a Speech Generating Device, we would love to discuss how these devices could enhance your child's therapy journey. Contact us today to learn more about our speech therapy services and how we can tailor a solution that meets your child's needs.

As technology continues to advance, so do the possibilities for supporting individuals with speech impairments. SGDs are a game-changer in the field of speech therapy, offering greater independence, communication, and overall quality of life for those who need them. We're thrilled to bring this exciting development to our clients at SAGE Speech & Learning Associates and look forward to the continued impact these devices will have on our therapy sessions.

Thank you to Ashley from Certified Seating and Mobility for educating the SAGE Speech Team on these important devices. For more information on how SGDs can help in your child's therapy, don't hesitate to reach out to us. Together, we can reach your child's highest potential for communication.
