Did you know that 10% of all children will have a speech-language impairment?

According to the ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association):

Most children develop speech and language skills within a specific age range. A child who takes longer to learn a skill may have a delay or impairment.  Learn more about what to expect from your child from birth to 5 years old by following our blog HERE.

An impairment in comprehension can lead to frustration for both parent and child.  Difficulty reaching academic potential, understanding complex or nuanced social situations, and partaking in the myriad of situations requiring a child to understand their surroundings.  An impairment in expressive language can manifest in how a child can communicate their needs with others, demonstrating their knowledge in the classroom and talking with and socializing with peers.

Often overlooked, but equally as important, is safety!

A child with speech or language delays may have trouble advocating for themselves in dangerous situations, asking for help when needed, or understanding when a situation may be potentially hazardous.

Children with speech or language impairments may be at higher risk for anxiety and depression, especially when their impairment impacts social functioning.

Speech-language pathologists, or SLPs, can help you identify whether your child is delayed in their speech and language skills.  An SLP will evaluate your child's skills, review their recommendations with you, and create a treatment plan specifically for your child.  Weekly speech language therapy will help to provide your child with the skills they need to close the gap, as well as with parent training.  Home carry over of therapy techniques can be the key to remediation of delays and can help set each child up to succeed!

The nationally licensed SLP's at SAGE Speech & Learning Associates are trained in a variety of treatment programs and approaches.  We value a strong continuing education approach, and always strive to provide developmentally appropriate and research based programs for our clients!  Each SLP specializes in an area of speech and language development, to provide expert advice and intervention for each of our clients and their unique needs.  Some areas of specialty include; articulation and phonological skills, language based learning disabilities, feeding and swallowing, apraxia, autism, and other developmental delays.

Additionally, SAGE provides families with all the tools they need to help children achieve their greatest potential.
